Originally opened as the Parkton Shopping Center in 1951, the Ballston Common Mall is one of the oldest continually-operating malls in the Washington, DC, area, as well as the first one built around a multi-story parking garage. That continues to be a major reason to shop there, with weekend visitors raving about the $1 parking, a massive bargain in the frequently gridlocked area. Once you’re out of your car, you have over a half a million square feet of shopping to enjoy. Anchored by a Macy’s, Ballston Common also boasts some unique stores that you won’t find anywhere else, such as the hilariously-named Santa’s Man Cave. At the top level is a Regal Cineplex movie theatre, showing all of the latest Hollywood blockbusters, and the food court on the first level offers a wide variety of dining options. The mall also hosts the Kettler Capitals Iceplex, which is the home facility for the NHL’s Washington Capitals.
